Hurricane Helene Intensifies Ahead of Landfall in Florida

Hurricane Helene surged into a Category 2 storm on Thursday morning, just hours before it's expected to hit Florida's Big Bend as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. The unusually large and rapidly intensifying storm is raising alarms along the Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings about the potential for a "life-threatening" storm surge, with water levels possibly rising between 15 and 20 feet in parts of Florida's Gulf Coast. 

 

Although Helene's landfall is predicted for Thursday night, its immense size means its impacts will be felt much earlier. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) highlighted Helene’s vast wind field, which extends up to 275 miles from the storm’s center, making its effects far-reaching.
